Medicare covers up to 20 acupuncture sessions per year for beneficiaries with chronic low back pain (cLBP) — defined as pain lasting 12 or more weeks that has not fully resolved with other treatments. An additional 20 sessions are available for patients who show improvement. AcuMed Clinic will be enrolling in Medicare and will be one of the few credentialed acupuncture providers in Southwest Florida accepting this coverage.

Chronic low back pain involves multiple overlapping mechanisms: local tissue damage, muscle guarding and spasm, nerve sensitization, and — in long-standing cases — central sensitization, where the nervous system itself becomes hypersensitive to pain signals. Conventional pain management typically targets only one of these mechanisms at a time. AcuMed Clinic's multi-modal approach addresses all of them.
Acupuncture reduces local inflammation, releases myofascial trigger points, and modulates the nervous system's pain response at the spinal cord level. Trigger point injection therapy delivers targeted relief to the specific muscle groups perpetuating your pain cycle. Neuro-electric medicine desensitizes hypersensitive nerve pathways. Sciatic pain — the shooting, burning, or electric pain that radiates from the low back through the buttock and down the leg — is one of the most distressing forms of chronic pain. It is typically caused by compression or irritation of the sciatic nerve, whether from a herniated disc, spinal stenosis, piriformis syndrome, or sacroiliac dysfunction.
Acupuncture is particularly effective for sciatica because it simultaneously addresses the nerve irritation, the inflammatory environment around the nerve, and the compensatory muscle patterns that develop in response to chronic pain. Electroacupuncture — applying gentle electrical stimulation through acupuncture needles — has the strongest clinical evidence for sciatic nerve pain and is a primary technique in Dr. Kitt's protocol for this condition.
