AcuMed Clinic · Sarasota, FL
Conservative, drug-free support for ringing, buzzing, and ear-related symptoms.
Tinnitus is often described as ringing in the ears, but for many people it feels more complex — buzzing, hissing, clicking, pulsing, roaring, humming, or a high-pitched tone that no one else can hear. It may come and go, affect one ear or both ears, or become more noticeable at night when the room is quiet. At AcuMed Clinic - Pain & Chronic Care in Sarasota, FL, we understand that tinnitus can affect more than your hearing — it can disrupt sleep, make it harder to concentrate, increase stress, and interfere with everyday activities. Tinnitus is a symptom that may be connected to changes in hearing, stress, neck and jaw tension, medication side effects, circulation, prior noise exposure, or other health factors. AcuMed offers evidence-informed, non-surgical, drug-free care designed to support comfort, nervous system regulation, muscle tension patterns, sleep quality, and overall function.

Tinnitus can have many possible causes. Common contributors may include age-related hearing changes, past or current exposure to loud noise, earwax buildup, ear infection or fluid changes, certain medications, jaw clenching or TMJ irritation, neck tension or prior neck injury, stress and nervous system activation, sleep disruption, circulation-related factors, prior head injury or concussion, and chronic pain or muscle guarding patterns.
Because tinnitus can sometimes be linked to medical issues that need evaluation, AcuMed may recommend that patients coordinate with a primary care provider, ENT, audiologist, or other specialist when appropriate.
Tinnitus often becomes more disruptive when the nervous system is on high alert. The sound may begin in the auditory system, but the way the brain responds to that sound can influence how noticeable and distressing it feels. Tinnitus may become harder to ignore when a person is tired, stressed, anxious, in pain, or sleeping poorly.
This can create a cycle: tinnitus becomes noticeable, the brain monitors the sound, the sound creates stress, stress increases nervous system arousal, sleep becomes harder, fatigue increases sensitivity, and the tinnitus feels more intrusive. At AcuMed, care is designed to support the whole person — improving sleep, reducing neck and jaw tension, calming stress responses, and supporting pain regulation may help reduce the overall burden of tinnitus for some patients.
Medical acupuncture is a conservative, drug-free therapy that may be part of a broader care plan for some patients with tinnitus. At AcuMed, treatment is individualized based on the patient's symptoms, medical history, stress level, sleep quality, pain patterns, and contributing factors such as neck or jaw tension.
For tinnitus, medical acupuncture may help support nervous system regulation, stress response and relaxation, sleep quality, pain modulation, neck, shoulder, and jaw tension patterns, and overall comfort and quality of life. The goal is not to promise tinnitus elimination, but to support the systems that may be contributing to symptom intensity, distress, and daily function.
Medical massage and myofascial release may be appropriate when tinnitus is associated with neck tension, jaw tightness, headaches, shoulder stiffness, or upper back muscle guarding. Some patients notice that their tinnitus changes with posture, jaw movement, clenching, neck rotation, or pressure around the head and neck.
Treatment may address neck and shoulder tension, jaw and facial muscle tightness, upper back stiffness, trigger point sensitivity, headache-related muscle patterns, and postural strain from computer work, driving, or daily activity. At AcuMed, medical massage is used as a clinical tool to support care goals.
