When hip osteoarthritis causes pain or stiffness, the body may compensate — shortening the stride, shifting weight away from the painful side, or using the low back and knee differently. Over time, these compensations can contribute to pain in nearby regions.
Pain and function are influenced by more than cartilage alone.
