AcuMed Clinic · Sarasota, FL
Conservative, drug-free care for knee swelling, kneeling pain, and bursa irritation.
Knee bursitis can make kneeling, stairs, walking, gardening, exercise, and daily movement uncomfortable. It often causes tenderness, swelling, warmth, or aching around the front, inside, or outside of the knee depending on which bursa is irritated. At AcuMed Clinic - Pain & Chronic Care in Sarasota, FL, we approach knee bursitis as part of the larger knee, hip, ankle, and gait system. Knee bursitis may involve local inflammation, soft-tissue irritation, repetitive pressure, altered walking mechanics, muscle guarding, or compensation from other joints.

A bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion that helps reduce friction between tissues. Around the knee, bursae help protect areas where skin, tendons, ligaments, and bones move near each other. When a bursa becomes irritated, it may swell and become tender. Knee bursitis often becomes noticeable with pressure — kneeling may irritate the front of the knee, and stairs or repetitive bending may increase symptoms when surrounding tissues are already sensitive.
Because knee swelling can have several causes, evaluation is important when symptoms are severe, persistent, or unusual. Significant redness, warmth, fever, or rapidly worsening swelling should be evaluated promptly for infection or other causes.
Medical Acupuncture may be used as part of a conservative care plan for knee bursitis-related pain and guarding. Treatment is individualized based on pain location, swelling tendency, walking tolerance, activity triggers, and related hip, thigh, or calf tension. For knee bursitis, acupuncture may help support pain modulation, nervous system regulation, muscle relaxation, circulation, reduced guarding around the thigh and knee, comfort with walking and stairs, and sleep and stress support when pain is persistent.
Acupuncture does not remove a bursa or guarantee immediate resolution of swelling. For appropriate patients, it may help reduce symptom burden and support movement comfort as part of a broader conservative plan.
