AcuMed Clinic · Sarasota, FL
Conservative, drug-free care for outer hip pain and trochanteric bursitis.
Hip bursitis can make walking, stairs, sleeping on your side, getting in and out of the car, and staying active feel uncomfortable. Many patients describe pain or tenderness on the outside of the hip, often near the bony area at the side of the upper thigh. At AcuMed Clinic - Pain & Chronic Care in Sarasota, FL, we approach hip bursitis as part of the larger hip, pelvis, low back, and gait system. Outer hip pain may involve an irritated bursa, gluteal tendon irritation, muscle guarding, altered walking mechanics, low back compensation, or a combination of factors.

A bursa is a small fluid-filled cushion that helps reduce friction between tissues. Around the outside of the hip, the bursa sits near muscles and tendons that help stabilize the pelvis during walking. When this region becomes irritated, side-lying, stairs, walking, or pressure over the hip may become painful. If the gluteal muscles are guarded, weak, or overloaded, the outer hip may become more sensitive. If low back or sacroiliac pain changes the way you walk, the outer hip may take on extra stress.
A care plan for hip bursitis may consider outer hip tenderness, gluteal muscle tension, walking mechanics, low back and pelvic compensation, sleep position, activity load, trigger point sensitivity, and pain sensitivity. At AcuMed, treatment is tailored to the patient's specific pattern and goals.
Medical Acupuncture may be used as part of a conservative care plan for hip bursitis-related pain and muscle guarding. Treatment is individualized based on pain location, walking tolerance, sleep disruption, activity triggers, and related low back or pelvic symptoms. For hip bursitis, acupuncture may help support pain modulation, nervous system regulation, muscle relaxation, circulation, reduced guarding around the hip and pelvis, improved comfort with walking, and sleep support when side-lying pain is present.
Acupuncture does not remove the bursa or guarantee elimination of inflammation. For appropriate patients, it may help reduce symptom burden and support movement as part of a broader conservative plan.
