AcuMed Clinic

The Apothecary

A clinical reference library where food, herbs, and natural medicine meet evidence-based care. Everything here is grounded in the principles of Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine — and in the practical realities of living well in Sarasota.

Herbs, spices, and botanicals used in Chinese herbal medicine and natural medicine

For thousands of years, apothecaries were where food and medicine overlapped. Long before pharmaceutical companies separated the two, healers understood that the best remedies often came from the kitchen, the garden, and the field.

At AcuMed Clinic, we hold to that tradition. Our “Food First. Herbs Second.” philosophy means we always look for the most practical, accessible, and sustainable intervention first — and build from there. This library is where that clinical thinking becomes a resource you can use every day.

In Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, food is the first medicine. Herbology

Zhōng Yào Xué — 中药学

Chinese herbal medicine is one of the most sophisticated pharmacological systems in history. Individual herbs are rarely used alone — they are combined into carefully balanced formulas that address the root cause of a pattern while minimizing side effects and supporting the body's own healing capacity.

AcuMed Clinic's Herbology section will cover individual herbs, classical formula categories, and the clinical reasoning behind herbal prescriptions — bridging traditional texts with current research. Many of the herbs covered will cross-reference individual food profiles in the Food Therapy section, reflecting the reality that the boundary between food and medicine is often a matter of dose and preparation rather than kind.

Homeopathy

Homeopathia Classica

Classical homeopathy uses highly diluted natural substances to stimulate the body's own healing response. Like Acupuncture and Herbal Medicine, homeopathy is a system of individualized treatment — two patients with the same diagnosis may receive entirely different remedies based on their constitutional type, symptom picture, and overall pattern of health.

AcuMed Clinic integrates homeopathy as one of several drug-free, non-toxic modalities available within a comprehensive treatment plan. The Homeopathy section of the Apothecary will provide an accessible introduction to constitutional types, common remedy categories, and how homeopathic care fits within an integrative medicine practice.

In development. Homeopathy content will be added as AcuMed Clinic's integrative care offerings expand. Check back for updates.

Food First. Herbs Second.

At AcuMed Clinic, we believe the most powerful interventions are often the most practical ones. Before recommending a herbal formula, we look at what a patient is eating. Before prescribing a supplement, we ask whether a therapeutic food could achieve the same result. The Apothecary reflects that philosophy — starting with what belongs on your plate and building from there.
