Acupuncture Insurance Coverage in Sarasota: Medicare, VA, BCBS & UHC

Many people assume acupuncture is a cash-only service — something you budget for separately from your regular healthcare costs. That assumption is increasingly out of date. Insurance coverage for acupuncture has expanded significantly over the past several years, and depending on your plan, you may have more coverage than you realize.

Patients frequently ask whether Medicare, VA Community Care, Florida Blue, or UnitedHealthcare cover acupuncture in Sarasota. The answer depends on your plan, diagnosis, and eligibility requirements. This guide explains what is covered and how AcuMed Clinic helps patients verify their benefits.

At AcuMed Clinic, opening August 3, 2026 in Sarasota, we accept VA Community Care, Blue Cross Blue Shield (BCBS), and UnitedHealthcare (UHC). We are also enrolling in Medicare. We also offer community acupuncture for patients whose insurance does not cover our services or who prefer a more affordable option. Here is what you need to know about each path to care.

Medicare Coverage for Acupuncture

Medicare began covering acupuncture for chronic low back pain in 2020, and it remains one of the most significant expansions in insurance coverage the field has seen.

What Medicare covers: Original Medicare (Parts A and B) covers acupuncture for chronic low back pain, commonly referred to as cLBP. To qualify, your low back pain must have lasted 12 weeks or longer. It must also be non-specific — meaning it is not attributed to a known structural cause such as a cancer diagnosis, infection, or inflammatory disease that would direct treatment elsewhere.

How many sessions are covered: Medicare covers up to 12 acupuncture sessions within a 90-day window. If you demonstrate measurable improvement, Medicare may authorize up to 8 additional sessions within that same treatment year — for a potential total of 20 covered visits annually. If treatment is not producing improvement, treatment will end.

What this means in practice: For patients managing chronic low back pain, this is real, substantial coverage. Visits that would otherwise be entirely out of pocket can be billed directly to Medicare, which can make a significant difference for patients on fixed incomes or those managing multiple health conditions simultaneously.

At AcuMed Clinic: Dr. Kitt (Dr. Katrina Chojnicki-Hill, DAOM, AP) has clinical experience serving Medicare beneficiaries and will be one of the few Medicare-credentialed acupuncture providers in Southwest Florida. All billing is handled through our third-party billing service — you receive care, we manage the documentation and claims process.

One important note: Medicare coverage for acupuncture is currently limited to chronic low back pain. If you are seeking acupuncture for neuropathy, neck pain, joint pain, sciatica, or any condition beyond cLBP, Medicare does not cover those services at this time. We will always be straightforward with you about what is and is not covered before your first appointment. However, you should know that Medicare does cover some of our other services provided by the clinic: Ultrasound therapy, Neuromuscular Therapy, Manual Therapy, and Trigger Point Injection Therapy.

VA Community Care and Acupuncture

If you are a veteran receiving care through the VA, you may be eligible to receive acupuncture with approved providers through the VA Community Care Network (CCN).

How it works: The VA Community Care program allows eligible veterans to receive certain types of care outside of a VA facility. This can happen when a VA facility cannot provide the service within a reasonable timeframe, when a veteran lives beyond a certain distance from a VA location, or when other qualifying criteria are met. Acupuncture is an authorized service under the VA Community Care program.

What veterans need to do first: Authorization must come from your VA care team before you schedule with a community provider. Acupuncture through VA Community Care is not a direct self-referral. Your VA primary care provider or care coordinator initiates the referral and processes the authorization. This step must happen before your first appointment.

At AcuMed Clinic: Dr. Kitt is VA Community Care credentialed and will be accepting VA Community Care patients from Day 1 of our August 3 opening. If you have your authorization in hand, you are ready to schedule. If you are still working through the referral process, reach out — we are happy to answer questions about what to expect.

We are grateful for the opportunity to serve veterans in our community.

Commercial Insurance: BCBS, UHC, and Others

For patients with commercial insurance through an employer, the health insurance marketplace, or a private plan, acupuncture coverage is increasingly common — though it varies considerably by plan.

BCBS acupuncture coverage: Blue Cross Blue Shield plans, including those offered through Florida Blue and other BCBS affiliates, often include acupuncture as a covered benefit, particularly for pain management and musculoskeletal conditions. The specifics — how many sessions are covered, whether a referral is required, what your cost-sharing looks like — depend on your individual plan. AcuMed Clinic accepts BCBS.

UHC acupuncture coverage: UnitedHealthcare offers acupuncture benefits on many of its commercial plans, and coverage has expanded in recent years as acupuncture has gained broader recognition as an evidence-based treatment for pain. As with BCBS, the details depend on your specific plan. AcuMed Clinic accepts UHC.

Why coverage varies: Even within the same insurance company, individual plan designs differ. Some plans cover acupuncture as a standalone benefit; others fold it into broader complementary or alternative care categories. You may have a copay, a deductible to meet first, a cap on annual visits, or a requirement to obtain a referral from your primary care provider. Some plans allow direct access.

What we recommend: Call us and we can verify your benefits and explain exactly what your insurance covers. We can answer questions like: "Does my plan cover acupuncture? Is AcuMed Clinic or Dr. Katrina Chojnicki-Hill in-network? How many visits are covered per year? Do I need a referral?"

Frequently Asked Questions

Does Medicare pay for acupuncture?

Yes, but only for non-specific chronic low back pain. Contact us to find out if you are a candidate.

How many acupuncture visits does Medicare cover?

Medicare covers 12 visits in 90 days. If the patient is showing improvement, Medicare will approve an additional 8 visits, for a total of 20 visits per year. If the patient does not demonstrate improvement, Medicare will discontinue coverage for acupuncture treatments.

Does Medicare cover acupuncture for neuropathy?

No, Medicare does not cover acupuncture for neuropathy, but Medicare does cover some other services provided by AcuMed Clinic: Ultrasound therapy, Neuromuscular Therapy, Manual Therapy, and Trigger Point Injection Therapy.

Does Medicare cover acupuncture for sciatica?

If the sciatica is due to non-specific chronic low back pain, then yes. Contact us to find out if you are a candidate.

Does Florida Blue cover acupuncture?

Many Florida Blue plans include acupuncture benefits, but coverage varies by plan. Call AcuMed Clinic and we will verify your benefits, and let you know what your plan covers.

Do I need a referral for acupuncture?

That is specific to your insurance policy. Most do not require a referral. Call AcuMed Clinic. We will verify your benefits, and let you know what your plan requires.

What if AcuMed Clinic does not accept my insurance and it covers acupuncture?

AcuMed Clinic will create a Super Bill for you to submit to your insurance company for reimbursement. We will also look into becoming credentialed with your insurance.

What if my insurance does not cover acupuncture?

Not every insurance plan covers acupuncture. Not every condition that responds well to acupuncture falls within what insurers currently reimburse. If that is your situation, you still have meaningful options.

Is AcuMed Clinic in-network with my insurance?

AcuMed Clinic currently accepts VA Community Care, BCBS, and UHC and is enrolling with Medicare. Contact us to verify your specific plan and network status.

Community acupuncture is a group treatment model in which several patients receive acupuncture simultaneously in a shared, relaxed space. Sessions are provided in a dedicated community room with comfortable reclining chairs. The format allows us to offer care at a rate that is significantly more affordable than a private individual appointment, without sacrificing the quality or attentiveness of treatment.

At AcuMed Clinic, community acupuncture is priced to be more affordable than individual sessions, and financial aid is available for patients who need additional support.

Cash-pay individual appointments are also available for patients who prefer a private treatment room and a one-on-one session with Dr. Kitt. If you are self-pay, contact us to learn about current rates.

How to Find Out What You're Covered For

Here is a practical checklist for understanding your coverage before your first visit:

If you have Medicare: Contact us to confirm that your low back pain meets the criteria for chronic low back pain as defined by Medicare. Make sure your provider is Medicare-credentialed. Keep in mind that Medicare covers acupuncture for cLBP only — not other conditions at this time.

If you are a veteran: Contact your VA primary care provider or care coordinator and ask about a Community Care referral for acupuncture. Make sure your authorization is processed before scheduling with a provider. Once you have authorization, contact AcuMed Clinic — we are credentialed and ready to see you from Day 1.

If you have BCBS, UHC, or other commercial insurance: Call us and we will verify your benefits. We can find out if acupuncture is covered under your specific plan, how many visits are included per year, what your copay is, whether prior authorization or a referral is required, and whether AcuMed Clinic is in-network.

If you have no coverage or no acupuncture benefit: Ask about community acupuncture — it is more affordable and financial aid is available. Ask about cash-pay rates for individual appointments. We will work with you to find an option that is realistic for your situation.
