Quick Facts
AHM Properties
Tofu builds Qi, replenishes Yin, cools heat, promotes fluid production, and clears toxins. It is among the most adaptable plant proteins in AHM dietary practice. Because of its cooling nature, it is especially useful in warm weather and for heat-type patterns — though it should be cooked and paired with warming spices for anyone with a cold or damp constitution. Firmer varieties are more tonifying; silken forms are more moistening.
Tofu's isoflavones — primarily genistein and daidzein — inhibit NF-kB and other inflammatory signaling pathways, reinforcing its AHM role as a cooling, Yin-nourishing food appropriate for Heat patterns and deficiency conditions.
Contraindications
Avoid in Cold patterns or Spleen deficiency with damp. Cooked tofu is warmer than raw. Silken tofu is more cooling than firm.
