AHM Properties

Star anise is a powerful warmer of Kidney Yang that drives cold out of the Spleen and Stomach, moves Qi, and eases cold-type abdominal pain. It is one of the five ingredients in the classical five-spice blend, which brings all five flavors into balance and supports every organ system. When used in cooking, it encourages healthy digestion, breaks up cold-damp stagnation, and warms the middle burner.

Star anise contains anethole, which inhibits COX inflammatory enzymes and NF-kB signaling, and also has antispasmodic and analgesic properties with traditional AHM application for cold-type abdominal pain, bloating, and joint discomfort.

Contraindications

Avoid in heat patterns or Yin deficiency. Use in small amounts — potent. Caution in pregnancy.
