AHM Properties

Few foods in the AHM pantry shift their actions as dramatically as lotus root depending on how they are prepared. Eaten raw, it cools the Blood and helps arrest bleeding; once cooked, it takes on a mildly warming quality — supporting Qi, building Blood, and strengthening the Stomach and Spleen. Its naturally high vitamin C and tannin content aligns well with both its hemostatic and immune-supporting functions.

Lotus root contains polyphenols and tannins with anti-inflammatory and hemostatic properties consistent with its dual AHM functions of cooling and tonifying, applicable to both acute inflammatory conditions and chronic deficiency patterns depending on preparation.

Contraindications

Raw lotus root is very cooling — cooked is warmer and more tonifying. Avoid excess raw in Cold constitutions.
